ISEB Common Pre-Test FAQs

The ISEB Common Pre-Tests, is administered by the Independent Schools Examinations Board (ISEB), serve as a crucial component of the admissions process for the most competitive and academic senior schools. These tests are meticulously designed to assess students' academic aptitude and potential across key disciplines, including English, Mathematics, Verbal Reasoning, and Non-Verbal Reasoning.

The ISEB Pre-Tests are administered online and use an adaptive, multiple-choice format. This approach tailors each student's test experience to their individual abilities, with questions dynamically selected based on their responses.

The ISEB exam consist of four main components, each targeting specific cognitive skills and competencies:

  • English: Assesses students' proficiency in reading comprehension and grammar.
  • Mathematics: Evaluates students' mathematical knowledge and problem-solving skills.
  • Verbal Reasoning: Measures students' comprehension, reasoning, and logic using language-based questions.
  • Non-Verbal Reasoning: Assess students' critical thinking and problem-solving abilities using figures and diagrams.

Note: Students are allowed to use pen/pencil and paper for working out during the Verbal Reasoning and Mathematics tests. However, this is not permitted during the Non-Verbal Reasoning or English tests. These are provided by the invigilator at the place you take the test.

By working through this prep pack, students will be thoroughly prepared for the actual ISEB test, giving them the best possible chance of securing a place at their chosen school.
One drawback of the adaptive format is that students cannot review or change their answers to previous questions. This may cause some anxiety for students who are used to being able to go back and check their work. So, practicing with our mock test can build confidence in that area.
Our tests are not adaptive but once answered there is no chance to review or change your answer. The questions do get progressively harder so your child will be challenged during the test.
