About Placement Tests

Nearly all institutions of higher education require some sort of placement test. The goal of these placement tests is to properly place students, regardless of status (new student, returning student, etc.), in the appropriate level class. Performance on a placement test can determine whether a student begins their studies in introductory, remedial, or upper level courses. Placement tests can also be used to determine the English proficiency of English language learners. English language learners can be placed into English as a Second Language (ESL) classes at various levels or into regular English classes.

Some colleges use national standardized placement test like the ACCUPLACER, while other others write their own tests. Sometimes, you can receive placement based on Advanced Placement (A.P.), International Baccalaureate (I.B.) or other courses you may have taken in high school. It's a good idea to look at your college's website and talk to your guidance counselor about placement tests. Even if the college creates its own tests, it may be possible to find out about the format of the test or to see a sample test. TestPrep-Online's Higher Education Test Practice materials can help you do a thorough review of high school level material to prepare your for various kinds of admission and placement tests.

About the ACCUPLACER

The ACCUPLACER is an increasingly popular test used across the United States to assess college-level math and English language abilities. This multiple choice, computer-based test is used as part of the enrollment process at hundreds of colleges and universities across the country. An expository essay is also included. Each section of the ACCUPLACER is scored on a scale of 20 to 120. There is no set passing score. Rather, each college, university, or other educational institution uses English and math scores to determine which courses a student must take to fulfill basic and degree-specific requirements.

The ACCUPLACER Math test consists of the following sections: Arithmetic, College-Level Math, and Elementary Algebra.

The ACCUPLACER English test consists of the following sections: Reading Comprehension, Sentence Skills, and Essay.

The ACCUPLACER is an untimed test, with approximately 12-40 questions on each section. It usually takes about 1.5-2 hours to complete.

Why Prepare for Placement Tests?

Often, placement tests simply assess your grasp of the mathematical and language concepts you learned in high school. In such a case, you may only need a refresher before the actual test. If you do not pass the placement test, you may find yourself in a remedial math or English class covering material you have already learned. Placement test preparation and practice will likely save you time and money you would otherwise spend on remedial level classes.

The skills you build while preparing for a placement test won't just help you place into higher-level classes--they're also essential to college and career success in every field. No matter what you choose to study, you'll have to comprehend, synthesize, and think critically about different sources of information. You can build a foundation for success by giving yourself the tools that you need before your studies officially begin.

Doing well on a placement test can save a student significant investments of time and money. Placing into higher-level courses allows a student to spend more time studying what interests them and possibly to finish his or her educational program faster. In many cases, remedial and ESL classes are not offered for credit, so students placed into these classes must invest study time and tuition money into courses that don't directly contribute to their degree programs.

Studying for a placement test can be a great way to develop strong study habits to start your educational program on the right foot. Doing your best even on a test that doesn't result in a grade will build your confidence and self-esteem. Starting a new program can be a major life transition, whether you've been out of school for a summer vacation or several years. Getting into good study habits ahead of time will greatly reduce the stress of this transition and allow you to take full advantage of opportunities.
