Below are preview questions. Each question is dealing with a different subject and they are followed by explanations. Before you try and solve a question, you should read the instructions. All these questions are suited to a NNAT Level B test.

Pattern Completion

1. Look at the design in the large rectangle while paying attention to the missing square. Which answer choice completes the design?

The correct answer is A.

Look at the arrow in the top-left corner of the large rectangle. As you move clockwise around the sides of the rectangle, each blue arrow rotates 90 degrees counterclockwise. Rotating the arrow to the right of the empty square 90 degrees counterclockwise will result in a vertical blue arrow pointing downwards. Notice that only part of the arrow is missing. The only answer choice that conforms to these properties is answer choice A.

Another way of solving the questions would be using the image symmetry. Imagine a horizontal line going through the middle of the picture. It is easy to notice that the top part is a reversed image of the bottom part. Now we can realize that the missing part in the picture will be a reversed image of what appears above it. Above the missing part we can see an arrow pointing upwards, so its reversed image will be an arrow pointing downwards. Therefore, the only possible answer choice is answer choice A.

Imagine extending the curve of the circle across the empty square. The curve will extend across the top-right corner of the square. Answer choice C is the only answer choice which contains this property. We can eliminate answer choices A, B, D, and E because they contain lines which extend in different directions.

Answer choice C is the only remaining answer choice.

Reasoning by Analogy

1. Choose the shape that matches the pattern of the given matrix

The correct answer is A

Look at the top row. The left figure is the mirror image of the right figure, flipped horizontally. It is helpful to focus on a specific part of the shape. For example, in the left frame, the top blue square appears in the left corner and in the right frame, the top blue square appears in the right corner.

Now, look at the bottom row. The figures in the bottom row will follow the same rules. The figure on the right will be the mirror image of the figure on the left. The left figure contains a white circle over four squares: yellow in the top-left and bottom-right corners, and blue in the opposite corners. The figure on the right will also contain a white circle over the four squares. The difference will be that the yellow squares will be positioned in the top-right and bottom-left corners, and the blue squares will be positioned in the top-left and bottom-right corners. The correct answer is answer choice A. 

2. Choose the shape that matches the pattern of the given matrix

Answer & Explanation

The correct answer is B. In this analogy, the shapes remain the same across the rows, as does the color scheme going down the columns. The top row contains triangles and the bottom row contains pentagons. Thus, we can eliminate answer choices A and C, as they contain triangles rather than pentagons.

We are left with answer choices B, D, and E. The figures in the left column are yellow on a blue background and the figure in the right column is blue on a yellow background. Since the empty frame is in the right column, the figure will be blue on a yellow background. We can eliminate answer choice E, as  the figure is yellow on a blue background. Additionally, notice that the direction of the shapes does not change across the rows. Thus, we can eliminate answer choice D and are left with answer choice B, the correct answer. 

Serial Reasoning

1.  Identify the image which completes the pattern by examining how the series of shapes change across the rows and down the columns within the matrix. Where you can most easily visualize the relationship will determine the direction in which you examine the question.

The correct answer is C.

Across the rows and down the columns, each row and column contain one hexagon, one diamond, and one trapezoid. Since the bottom row and third column each contain one diamond and a trapezoid, the empty square will contain a hexagon. We can eliminate answer choices B and D. Pay attention to the color scheme of the matrix. Every other frame contains an image with a different background color (yellow or white). Since the middle frame in the third column contains a white background and the middle frame in the third row contains a white background, the answer choice will be an image with a yellow background. We are left with answer choice C.

2.  Identify the image which completes the pattern by examining how the series of shapes change across the rows and down the columns within the matrix. Where you can most easily visualize the relationship will determine the direction in which you examine the question.

The correct answer is E.

The matrix is composed of three types of figures and three background colors. Across the rows, the top row contains a blue background, the middle row contains a yellow background, and the bottom row contains a white background. We can eliminate answer choice C as it contains a blue background. Additionally, the bottom row contains yellow figures. We can eliminate answer choices A and B, as they contain blue figures.

Notice that each row and column contain one of each types of figures (a square with two diagonal lines, a square with a horizontal and vertical line, and a diamond with a horizontal and vertical line). The right column and bottom row each include a diamond with a horizontal and vertical line and a square with two diagonal lines. Thus, the answer choice will contain a square with a horizontal and vertical line. We are left with answer choice E.
