My son was preparing for CogAT Level 9. With practice, my son got used to the question styles and the practice built his confidence with the exam. Once kids know they can do well, there is no limit – they will always do their best. I have recommended TestPrep-Online to all my friends.

My 3rd grade daughter was recommended to take the CogAT. We loved the explanations as they helped her to understand the material. The packs are a helpful tool and less expensive than a private tutor.

Worth it. My son was taking the CogAT Level 5/6 for school and with help from the practice tests, he scored well and was able to get into the county's gifted program. Thank you so much.

CogAT Format

The CogAT 5th grade is a test divided into three categories called batteries. The three batteries of the CogAT are the Verbal Battery, Non verbal Battery, and Quantitative Battery. Each of these batteries has three sub-tests.

The sample questions below feature one question from each battery. It is important to solve all the questions in our practice pack to be prepared for all the possible formats of questions in the CogAT.

CogAT Sample Questions-5th Grade

The following question is a standard verbal analogies question (verbal battery). In this type of questions, you are presented with two words sharing a connection (by means of an analogy). Your objective in this question is to identify said connection, and apply it to the other word displayed. One way of finding a connection is by thinking of a sentence that involves both words. After you have thought of the sentence, try writing that sentence with the third word and fitting one of the answer choices. If you have trouble fitting an answer choice, then the connection you have found is probably not the correct one.

The following question is a typical question in Number Series, one of the sub-tests of the Quantitative Battery. In these questions, you are presented with a series of numbers (or a sequence). You objective for this question is to find the next number in the series. In order to do so, you need to find how throughout the series numbers change. From one number to the other, it could be simple addition (or any other basic operation). However, this is not necessarily the case for the next two terms (numbers) of the series. However, once you identify the connection between each number and its neighbor (the number before and after) you can see a pattern. After you have identified said pattern, apply it to the last known number in the sequence to get the answer.

[2] What number comes next in the series?

The following question belongs to the Non-Verbal Battery (figure classification question) of the CogAT. Much like in the previous question, you are presented with a series of images (in this case, shapes). You need to find the common denominator of all those shapes. After that, you need to look in the answer choices and find the answer choice that shares those same characteristics. Only one answer much share the characteristics. Therefore, if you think of a reason that binds all the shapes together, and more than one answer choice answers this criteria, you may be ignoring another characteristic that only one of the answer choices fulfills.

[3] The top three shapes have something in common. Which of the five answer choices beneath the three shapes is most like them?

Answers

[1] Verbal battery Choice 2 – The correct answer is: cured. To persuade is to make someone convinced, in the same way, that to heal is to make someone cured.

[2] Quantitative battery Choice 1 – The correct answer is 14. In this series, the pattern is as follows: first 12 is added, then 8 is subtracted, then 12 is added, then 8 is subtracted, and so on. The pattern is: +12, -8, +12, -8, .... The last two numbers in this series are 10 and 22. 22 is bigger than 10 by 12, so the next number in the series should be smaller than 22 by 8. 22 − 8 = 14. Alternatively, we can look at the pattern as the combination of two separate patterns that alternate. One pattern (the odd terms) is a series of numbers that increase by 4, and the other pattern (the even terms) is another series that increases by 4. The pattern is: 2 14 6 18 10 22. We are missing the seventh number which is an odd term; therefore it should be bigger than the last odd term (the fifth number) by 4. The fifth number is 10, so: 10 + 4 = 14. Therefore, 14 is the correct answer.

[3]Non Verbal battery-Choice 5

– The correct answer is 5. At first glance, we see that all three figures in this question are shapes that point upwards and towards the right. However, there is more than one answer choice that points upwards and towards the right. So, which answer is correct? Let’s look again at the shapes in the top row. What else do they have in common? When we look closely, we see that all 3 shapes are comprised of straight lines. The only answer choice which follows this rule is the 5th choice. Therefore, the 5th choice is the correct answer.
