What Is the OGT

The Ohio Graduation Test is a high school graduation exam taken by sophomores studying in the state of Ohio. The test measures students' knowledge and levels of understanding, thus ensuring all students have mastered high school level studies. Students must pass all five sections of the test to graduate. Junior and Seniors are given two additional chances to pass the section they did not pass; if they fail, they may also take the Alternative Pathway, which requires that students meet seven specific requirements to graduate.

OGT Sections

The OGT exam is composed of five different subtests that students have up to two and a half hours to complete:

  • Writing- The Writing section consists of 10 multiple choice questions, 1 short answer, and 2 extended responses.
  • Science- The Science section consists of 32 multiple choice questions, 4 short answers, and 2 extended responses.
  • Mathematics- The Mathematics section consists of 32 multiple choice questions, 5 short answers, and 1 extended response.
  • Social Studies- The Social Studies section consists of 32 multiple choice questions, 4 short answers, and 2 extended responses.
  • Reading- The Reading section consists of 32 multiple choice questions, 4 short answers, and 2 extended responses.

Note that each of these subtests also contains 6 extra questions that are tested for future exams. These items are not graded.

OGT Scores

Each of the OGT subtests is scored differently, and each has different standards for what qualifies as advanced, accelerated, proficient, basic, and limited performance levels. These standards change every year. The passing score for each section, however, is identical—400.

This means that your safest bet is to study hard to ensure you earn the highest scores possible.
